Function and design of bending formers

Bending formers support the pipe during the bending process and define the required bend radius. They are usually made from hardened steel or robust cast materials in order to withstand the forces generated during bending.

Depending on the pipe bender, the formers are mounted on a spindle, carrier or directly in the bending head. Supports and pressure rollers complete the system and ensure smooth guidance of the pipe.

Selecting the correct bending former

When choosing a bending former, the following aspects should be considered:

• pipe diameter and wall thickness
• required bend radius or centreline radius
• pipe material (e.g. carbon steel, galvanized steel)
• compatibility with the existing pipe bender (type/series)

Only if pipe size, radius and machine type match will you achieve clean, repeatable bending results.

Bending formers are used wherever steel pipes have to be shaped to fit the actual installation, for example:

• pipework fabrication in machinery and plant engineering
• installation of heating, cooling and service lines
• manufacturing frames, supports and structures from steel pipes
