Single-acting high tonnage cylinders are heavy duty hydraulic cylinders designed for lifting and supporting very large loads. They operate in one direction only: the piston extends under hydraulic pressure and returns by the weight of the load or by releasing the structure (load-return design).

Operating principle of single-acting high tonnage cylinders

These high tonnage cylinders are single-acting. The working piston extends under high pressure hydraulics and transfers force directly to the load. The return stroke is not provided by springs, but solely by the weight of the load or by controlled unloading of the structure (load-return design).

Because of the very high forces involved, the cylinders are built with a massive, rigid construction and usually relatively short strokes. They can be used as single units or in groups, for example in synchronised lifting systems for structural jacking.

Safe use and system design

For safe use of high tonnage cylinders, careful preparation of the support surfaces is essential. They must be flat, stable and capable of carrying the full load. Side loads should be avoided to prevent damage to the piston and guides.

For long-term support, suitable cribbing or engineered support structures should be used. Where mechanical locking of the lifted load is required, we recommend using lock nut cylinders from the dedicated category.
