Double-acting hydraulic cylinders for precise motion control

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders generate force in both directions: during extension and retraction of the piston. Hydraulic pressure is alternately applied to the piston side and the rod side, so that the cylinder actively works in both directions.

This cylinder design is used wherever precise motion control, an actively powered return stroke or repeated work cycles are required – for example in presses, machine tools, lifting and clamping systems and many other industrial applications.

How double-acting hydraulic cylinders work

In double-acting hydraulic cylinders, the oil flow is directed via a control valve alternately to the piston side and the rod side. This allows the cylinder to extend and retract under hydraulic power, without relying on springs, gravity or external mechanisms.

The available force differs between extension and retraction because the effective area on the rod side is smaller due to the piston rod. At the same time, motion speed and direction can be precisely controlled by the oil flow and the selected valve type.
