Telescopic high tonnage cylinders – long stroke in a compact design

Telescopic high tonnage cylinders are multi-stage hydraulic cylinders that combine a large total stroke with a relatively low closed height. Several piston stages extend one after another, providing stroke lengths of up to around 500 mm with load capacities in the 10 to 50 t range.

They are used where medium to high loads must be lifted or positioned, but a greater stroke is required than can be achieved with a conventional single-stage cylinder of similar size – for example for lifting, aligning and positioning machinery, frames and steel structures.

Depending on the design, telescopic high tonnage cylinders are available with different numbers of stages and mounting options and can be combined with suitable hydraulic pumps from our range.

Design and operating principle of telescopic high tonnage cylinders

Telescopic high tonnage cylinders consist of several nested piston stages that extend in sequence. The largest stage extends first, followed by the smaller stages until the full stroke is reached. During lowering, the stages retract in the opposite order.

This design makes it possible to achieve total stroke lengths of up to roughly half a metre while keeping the closed height relatively low. Telescopic high tonnage cylinders therefore bridge the gap between compact single-stage cylinders and more complex multi-component lifting arrangements.
