Operating principle of hydraulic nut splitters

The nut splitter is placed over the hex nut so that the chisel rests against one flat. When hydraulic pressure is applied from the pump, the ram advances, forcing the chisel into the nut and cracking it open. In many cases one or two splits are enough to remove the nut from the bolt.
