Saddles for hydraulic cylinders – safe load transfer and protection

Saddles for hydraulic cylinders are mounted on the piston or cylinder top and provide a safe, well-distributed contact area to the load. They protect the cylinder end from point loading and damage and improve grip between the cylinder and the component being lifted or pressed.

This category includes interchangeable saddles for different cylinder series and capacities – for example flat, grooved and tilting designs. Each saddle is matched to a specific piston diameter and the rated load of the cylinder.

Using the correct saddles allows hydraulic cylinders to be adapted to the application, extends cylinder life and helps to prevent damage to both load and tooling.

Function of saddles on hydraulic cylinders

The saddle is the direct contact surface between the hydraulic cylinder and the load. It distributes the cylinder force over a larger area, reduces local stresses and protects the piston or cylinder top from indentation and breakout. Grooved or profiled surfaces further improve grip on smooth components.

Main saddle types

Depending on the application, different saddle designs are available, such as:

flat saddles for use on flat, even surfaces
grooved/profiled saddles for improved grip
tilting saddles to compensate for slight angular misalignment
extended saddles for hard-to-reach contact points
replaceable wear saddles that can be changed easily when damaged

When should saddles be replaced?

Saddle replacement is recommended when:

deep indentations, cracks or deformation are visible
the surface is badly worn or polished smooth
the cylinder is used in a new application requiring a different saddle type or size
safety or maintenance procedures specify periodic replacement of wear parts
