A hydraulic cylinder is a key component in many machines and hydraulic systems. Its main function is to convert hydraulic fluid pressure into mechanical energy – usually into linear motion. Thanks to their robust design and high operational reliability, hydraulic cylinders are widely used in agriculture, plant and mechanical engineering, heavy industry, construction, vehicle engineering, transport and various types of special-purpose machinery.

How does a hydraulic cylinder work?

A hydraulic cylinder consists of several key components: the cylinder barrel (housing), the piston, sealing elements and one or more ports for the inlet and outlet of the working fluid (usually a dedicated hydraulic oil).

From a design point of view, hydraulic cylinders can be divided into two main groups: single-acting and double-acting cylinders.

Single-acting hydraulic cylinders

The extension stroke of the piston is generated by building up pressure of the working fluid in the cylinder chamber. The return to the initial position is achieved by a return spring or by the weight of the load (in the case of high-tonnage cylinders above 200 t). Under otherwise identical conditions, the force generated by this type of cylinder is lower than that of double-acting hydraulic cylinders, because during the forward stroke the spring force also has to be overcome. In most applications, however, this effect can be neglected.

In this design, the spring acts as the return element. In applications where the return stroke is produced by the driven mechanism itself, by another hydraulic cylinder or by the gravity of the lifted load, the hydraulic cylinder can be built without a return spring, as it is not necessary. This principle of operation is used, for example, in bottle jacks.

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders

In double-acting hydraulic cylinders, the force on the piston during both the extension and the retraction stroke is generated by building up pressure of the working fluid in the piston side and in the rod side of the cylinder.

It should be noted that during the extension stroke the force on the piston rod is higher and the piston speed is lower than during the retraction stroke, because the effective area on which the pressure acts is different on each side.

Actuating hydraulic cylinders

Hydraulic cylinders require an external power source to operate. The drives used for this purpose are hydraulic pumps. There are also integrated solutions – cylinders with a built-in pump. Depending on how the pump is driven, we can distinguish the following groups:

manual and foot-operated hydraulic pumps
hydraulic pumps driven by an electric motor
pneumatic-hydraulic pumps
pumps with combustion engines (typically used in heavy construction and agricultural machinery where no permanent electrical power supply is available)

The choice of the right pump type depends on the place of use, the available energy source (electricity or compressed air) and the operating conditions (occasional or intensive use).
